Faced with the arrival of 5G networks, the transportation sector will undergo dramatic changes. The implementation of 5G wireless networks can provide the high-speed data transmission rates required to enable intelligent transportation systems (ITS) on every mode of transportation. Vehicle safety, performance, navigation and autonomous driving will be fully enabled. Tracking goods, vehicles and people in transit will become ubiquitous. Instant communication between vehicles, traffic management systems and smart city or V2X infrastructure will be fully realized.
The infrastructure to support ITS technologies requires the development of a range of new electronic devices and systems. The variety of systems inside cars, trucks, trains, buses and other vehicles is just the beginning. It will also expand to traffic control and signage, ticketing systems, emergency service dispatch systems, gas stations and urban infrastructure, among others.
